Junior Model Club Criteria
Coach/Official Education and Development
Number/Level of Coaches - all holding relevant
WRU coaching awards
Coach/Player Ratio - 1 coach per 12 players
(maximum ratio)
Coaching Development - evidence of active
coaching to stay on register
Opportunities for Mentoring - 3 x level 2, 1 x
level 3 within club structure
First Aid - 6 qualified sports first aiders
Requirements for Officials - Liaison with
Referees society plus 5 qualified
referees within section
Qualifications Update - coaches to attend regular
update/revalidation
courses within three years of gaining their award
Child Protection Policy - adopt WRU procedures.
All coaches to complete
WRU Personal Disclosure Form.
Administration & Management -
- Club to be member of WRU and register Mini, Junior and Youth teams
with relevant bodies
- Evidence of recruitment policy for coaches, officials,
administrators to be seen - encourage support from parents and club members to help in
these areas
- Clubs to have written constitution
- Clubs to have personnel identified as responsible for Junior Club
Development, Finance, Coaching, Secretarial, Grounds and Recruitment
- Opportunities to be given to training administrators through the
SCW Running Sport Programme
- Realistic membership fees for junior members
- Appropriate records for Mini & Junior members to be kept,
including contact numbers for emergencies
Competition
- Clubs should enter all relevant local and nationally organised
competitions
- Clubs should at all times teach and encourage fair play, plus
adhere to WRU code of conduct
- Clubs should encourage players to take part in district trails and
not over play players
Equipment and Facilities
- Clubs must have high quality training and playing facilities
- A minimum of one session per 2 weeks must be designated to junior
development coaching only. The allocation of time set aside for coaching to be a
minimum of 45 minutes to a maximum of 90 minutes. Time allocated to match play and
fixtures to be in addition to match play and fixtures to be in addition to the coaching
sessions.
- Sufficient quantity and quality of appropriately sized equipment to
be available e.g. Post protectors, balls, cones, bibs, tackle pads, bags, flags.
Players Recruitment and Development
- Clubs to show evidence of strong links with local schools and
school teachers
- Clubs to recommend players of the required standard to Centres of
Development/Excellence; County or Regional representative level
Commitment to Junior Development
- Clubs must be committed and enthusiastic about the development of
Junior Rugby
- Clubs must be aware of the specific needs of children and must
provide a safe environment and friendly positive atmosphere
